Draperies are the oldest form of formal window fashions. They can offer the best light control, temperature and sound barrier of any window treatment. Drapery can be coordinated to match existing cloth furniture, rugs and walls. Furniture manufacturers also use many fabrics that are available for drapes.

Drapery can be used in combination with shades, blinds and shutters to give a stately complete look that sophisticated customers desire. Fabric used for valances, cornice, swags, cascades and sconces adds accent to other treatments and can also be layered as sheer and opaque depending on desired look.

Here is the scoop on custom versus semi-custom drape pricing. A full custom drape, where you and/or your designer choose the fabric and style can start below $20.00 per square foot, are typically $30.00 per square foot and can exceed $100.00 per square foot. Semi-custom, or pre-made drapes start below $5.00 per square foot. With Pre-made drapes, you are limited to the fabric(s) on-hand.

If you want to make a statement, pre-made and catalog drapes are not for you.

A duvet or bedcover you can purchase for less than $150.00 from a department or online store starts at around $450 for custom coordinated and can exceed $2000 depending on style, fabric and labor.

We recommend catalog treatments and inexpensive blinds if you are not planning to stay in a home for more than 2 years. You can have drapes that win awards, but a person buying your home will rarely have your taste.

Simply put, your investment should fit the need: short-term or long. Keep in mind that catalog treatments are not economically if at all returnable.
