This alternative to browsing by treatment has examples of a variety of window fashions by room.

Light control is important for South, West and East facing rooms. Heat is another factor for windows facing in these directions as well. The ability to reflect light and heat energy back through a window is important on hot days, but the ability to conduct sunlight and heat on cold days may also be an important factor.

Good light control for bedrooms is also common for uninterrupted sleep. Drapes provide the best room-darkening effect and are preferred for home theatre applications. Drapes can also be used as curtains to hide video screens similar to movie theatres.

Privacy is important for bed and bathrooms. The ability to allow light in, but maintain personal privacy can include all types of treatments from blinds, shutters and drapes to shades which can be purchased and configured top-down/bottom-up to allow outward viewing in a private manner. For total privacy, lined drapes provide the best result. Opaque shades, shutters and blinds and semi-opaque shades, in that order can also provide good privacy

A more formal look is normal for living and dining rooms. Shutters and drapes are standards for a formal look. Family and bonus rooms may have a less formal look such as woven woods

Areas of high moisture such as kitchens and bathrooms need to consider humidity and cleaning requirements with regard to window treatments. Generally, composite or poly-vinyl blinds or shutters are good for these applications. Pleated or honeycomb shades are hearty, but can get dirty requiring regular cleaning.

Window treatments that are on often open windows with or without screens need to be cleaned regularly.

Care must be taken with wood blinds due to expansion and contraction of the wood especially in areas of high and varying humidity. If warping slats, unfinished route holes or rough edges bother you, stick to high-end composite or faux (plastic) blind window covering products.
